Medicinal Herbs
The study of medicinal herbs has its roots in the science of Ayurveda. Ayurveda has been contributed by the medical practitioners of the Vedic Age, in India. They studied vastly the natural ways of treatment, and maintaining good health. For them each cultivated herb, as well as those growing in the wild has multiple medicinal values. The use of the herbs, as part of the science of Ayurveda has been documented in the four Vedas: Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Atharva Veda and Sama Veda.
In fact, according to the present day Ayurveda practitioners using herbs in cooking, as well as consuming herbal products in its various forms would ensure a healthy life for all members of the family. After all, where good health and longevity is concerned, it existed in the days of natural living. Apart from the Ayurvedic doctors, even nutritionists and dieticians prescribe fruits, raw vegetables and herbal products as part of the daily regime.
India is regarded as the treasure trove of herbs in the world. While the country cultivates almost every herb, yet the use of medicinal herbs seem to be more popular in the west. Yes, it is the western world that is propagating the value of the herbs in their daily life. They are moving away from the fast food to the natural foods. They are open to experimenting with a natural way of life.
The western world has termed the study of herbs as herbolobgy. There are researchers studying the value of each herb, thereby proving to the world the authenticity of all that has been prescribed in the science of Ayurveda.
The last couple of years has seen the vast use of Aloe Vera. In fact, there are huge number of households that cultivate this plant and use it in its natural form, rather than buying the Aloe Vera products from the market. It is regarded as one of the most important herbs gifted to mankind, as its medicinal value is holistic. It is also called a holistic plant.

- Ashwagandha: Used to treat rheumatism, leprosy and arthritis
- Asparagus Racemosus: These are useful in treating nervous disorders, dyspepsia, tumors, scalding of urine, throat infections, tuberculosis, cough and bronchitis.
- Basil Herb: It is used to treat malaria, catarrh, bronchitis and gastric disorders, Diabetes and mouth ulcers
- Calamus: It is used to cure of host of diseases such as epilepsy, mental ailments, chronic diarrhea and dysentery.
- Datura Stramonium: It is used to relieve the spasm that occurs when suffering from Bronchitis in Asthma. It is also used to treat Parkinsonism and Haemorrhoids.
- Guggul: It is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, cardiac disorders and high cholesterol.
- Hedychium: This is used to cure nausea, bronchial asthma, halitosis, vomiting, diminished appetite, hiccups and local inflammation.
- Henna: This is used to treat any burning sensation, leprosy, skin diseases, amenorrhoea, premature graying of hair, wounds, ulcers, strangury cough, bronchitis and dysentery.
- Liquorice: This is used for treating allaying coughs, catarrhal infections, and irritable conditions of the mucous membrane of the urinary organs, sore throat, cough, anorexia and persistent low fever.
- Moringa Oleifera: They are used to treat paralysis, inflammations, fever, cough, cold, bronchitis, pectoral diseases, epilepsy and hysteria.
- Pudina: This is used in curing headaches, rhinitis, cough sore throat, colic, prurigo and vomiting.
- Quince: It is used to sure colisting diarrhea, dysentery, constipation and diarrhea. It is also recommended as a tonic for the heart and brain.
- Rhubarb: It is useful in treating atonic dyspepsia.
- Safed Musli: It is used as a pain reliever and to cure general debility and impotency.
- Syzygium Cumini: It is used for strengthening the teeth and gums; as well as to cure diabetes, diarrhea and ringworm.
